We’d only been pondering whether iTunes would let you backdate DRM unlocks on songs you’d previously purchased for a few minutes when news came in from Apple that it would, with a simple one click solution – but it’ll cost you.
According to an an Apple spokesperson, iTunes now “offers customers a simple, one-click option to easily upgrade their entire library of previously purchased songs to the higher quality DRM-free iTunes Plus format for just 20 pence per song or 30 percent of the album price.”
On paper, that’s not a bad offer, though iTunesphiles had better watch out, as that could easily add up over a few albums. And considering that 7digital offered to backdate DRM for free last year, it seems a bit penny pinching.
It’s not clear if the new upgrade is in operation just yet – we don’t fancy paying to find out – but with up to 20 per cent of songs on the iTunes Store still DRM locked until the end of March, you might want to hold off until then.
