It’s all systems go for iTunes today: not only are all songs going DRM free from today, but you’ll also be able to download each and every one on to your iPhone via the 3G connection – hop it, hotspots!
Speaking at the MacWorld keynote today, Apple VP Phil Schiller slipped out a surprise announcement at the end of the talk on the new iTunes Store update. As of today, if you own an iPhone 3G you’ll be able to download songs the way you would in a WiFi hotspot anywhere with 3G reception. Same selection, same price, and all will sync with your computer when you get back to your computer, just like always.
It may not sound like a major breakthrough, but if you’ve ever had that thing where you’ve heard a song in a shop or cafe and forgotten the name by the time you’ve left, you’ll know it’s a god send. The only way we can see the iTunes Store on the iPhone experience being improved now is with audio recognition. Maybe that’ll have to wait until next year’s iLife update though.
