SatNav people Garmin have been keeping us hanging on for the fabled Nuvifone for quite some time now, but anyone craving a well thought out GPS-based smartphone may have the choice of two this year..

By the middle of 2009, Garmin plans to launch two mobile phone handsets. The first will be the aforementioned Nuvifone while the second will be a new as yet unnamed handset. The mystery phone will run Android, have GPS (duh) and will be manufactured by Eee netbook purveyors Asus.

Last month Garmin joined Android and open-source mobile thinktank the Open Handset Alliance alongside Sony Ericsson, Asus and Toshiba. The new phones will be launched in the Taiwanese market first, hopefully getting a western release soon after.
