Oh dear, this doesn’t sound good. Security researchers have uncovered a serious vulnerability that affects Nokia Series 60 phones (e.g. the N95, N73, etc) and can stop your mobile from receiving any SMS or MMS messages.
Dubbed the “Curse of Silence” by Tobias Engel of the Chaos Communication Congress, the exploit involves sending a specially formatted SMS message to the target phone. Phones running version 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 or 3.1 of Symbian S60 will be unable to receive any further messages and will require a factory reset to start working properly again.
Even better news – there is no fix currently available and if – post-reset -you restore a system backup from after the phone received the Curse message, it will be cursed all over again. What fun!
