This prototype notebook from gaming mavens Voodoo could well be the most powerful portable beast on the block. The folks from Laptop got some pre-CES time with the Firefly, a 17-inch, 13-pound monster with a 4.3-inch secondary screen and multi-touch trackpad.

The trackpad is stuck way over on the right of the keyboard for easier use with games, so you may not even need to hook up an actual mouse to tackle your favourite first-person shooter.

The secondary screen, meanwhile, has an 800 x 480 resolution and is located just under the main 1920 x 1200 display. It acts like a second monitor, so you can drag a window or app onto it – ideal for keeping track of your emails while gaming, or running iTunes or Winamp while working on the main screen.

Spec-wise the Firefly sports some serious muscle: a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Quad Core processor, 4GB of memory, not one but two ATI Mobility Radeon 3870 graphics processors and a 250GB hard drive.

The laptop is just a concept at the moment, and is being touted as a piece of HP hardware “with VoodooDNA”. Voodoo is now owned by HP, you see, and it seems like the Firefly will basically be a mobile version of HP’s Blackbird gaming desktop. Price and release date info is unknown at the moment, but hopefully we’ll be able to find out more at CES next week.
