Top 10 gadgets of 2008

From lightweight laptops to feature–laden smartphones, 2008 has been a truly great year if gadgets are your poison. Here’s our round–up of the ten tech treats that have left us cooing over the last 12 months.

1. iPhone 3G
The iPhone finally hit its stride in 2008, with faster web and the mighty App Store. Still lacking some basics, but we’ll forgive Apple. For now.

2. Asus Eee Top
A dirt cheap touchscreen desktop was never on the agenda at the start of the year, but we reckon Asus might just have kicked off another PC revolution with the Eee Top.

3. Philips LED Lux TV
Philips led the way with their Lux TV in 2008. Eye–catching design and eyeball stroking deep blacks made it undoubtedly the top telly of the year.

4. T-Mobile G1
Pug ugly, but packing Google’s game–changing Android mobile OS, T–Mobile’s G1 gave us more than a glimpse of how the Big G is set to change mobiles forever.

5. MacBook Air
The Air might cop flak for its single USB and lack of optical drive, but it’s the most gorgeous laptop ever created and got competitors scrabbling for (lower quality) answers.

6. Polaroid PoGo
The Polaroid snapper may be dead, but this killer Bluetooth printer keeps the old–school dream alive with instant access to your mobile snaps.

7. Acer Aspire One
The cheapest netbook going, the Aspire One has brought the web to anyone with a spare £200 and a taste for handbag–sized gadgets.

8. Sony Ericsson C905
This was the year 8MP camera phones hit Blighty. The C905 is undoubtedly the pick of the lot, offering up a proper replacement for your knackered point and shoot.

9. Nokia N97
Unveiled at the rear of the year, the N97 packs features to make Apple weep. With 32GB storage and a full touchscreen, Nok’s set the pace for 2009.

10. Apple MacBook
The aluminium MacBook’s premium price tag made us weep, but its unibody design made the aging white design look tired by comparison.

Blackberry Storm didn’t make it in then. Too late into 2008 to make the list or not good enough?

In the face of its foibles at launch, and the lack of apps, Wi-Fi and general stability we felt we couldn’t brand it one of the best this year. Maybe the follow-up in 2009 will do better…

I think the HTC TOUCH HD needs a mention here…
