With an increasing amount of confidential data being shuttled around on mobile devices – and a seemingly releated rise in the number of such devices being left on trains or stolen from glove compartments – there is clearly a need for some way of remotely wiping missing data.
One solution is Virtuity’s BackStopp Mobile- a bit of software that will sit on your phone and wipe it clean when you realise it has been swiped.
The app attempts to figure out where it is – using GPS, cell triangulations, etc. – and will fire off a text message with this data before it starts the self destruct sequence in case it may be of use to the police. Backstopp can also encrypt your data – something that you should probably be doing anyway if you are in the habit of carting it around on your phone or a USB stick.
Ominously, there is no listed price – you need to contact Virtuity for a little chat – which implies it may be a bit on the pricey side. Still, if you need it, you need it. The app is available for Windows Mobile, with Symbian versions in development.
