Users of Linux or Mac OS X have had good reason to feel a little left out where the BBC iPlayer is concerned – while Windows users have been able to download videos from the catchup service for the past 18 months, Mac and Linux-ites have been limited to streaming only. But that’s all changing, thanks to a new version that’s just become available for trial.
The reason the current iPlayer doesn’t support Mac downloads is our old enemy DRM: yep, because it’s built on Microsoft DRM tech, Mac and Linux are off the menu. But the new edition uses Adobe AIR DRM, which works with any operating system. Huzzah!
The fully finished version is scheduled for a February 2009 launch, but you can grab the trial edition by pointing your browser here.
