Anyone curious about the kind of new features and improvements that are coming to the Android operating system in the near(ish) future should look no further. Developers have published a roadmap for the ‘cupcake’ development branch – a version of the OS that is serving as a test bed for new ideas and all kinds of developmental craziness.

Among the bigger and more interesting to the end-user features coming down the pipe are:

  • An “Input method framework” which will make on screen ’soft’ keyboards and other input mechanisms easier to create.
  • Support for Stereo Bluetooth devices (e.g. headphones)
  • Faster Javascript using the new ‘SquirrelFish’ Javascript engine
  • Video recording
  • Music fades in/out around phone calls

Also on the cards for release sometime next year are lots of bug fixes that should make the OS a lot more stable and responsive. Check out the full list here, although be warned – it does get a bit technical.
