What’s better than HD TV? 3D TV, that’s what! Sky has been indulging in a spot of digital one-upmanship, touting the power of its HD set-top boxes by using them to receive 3D telly signals, despite the fact nobody’s got a compatible telly. Yet.

It’s the brainchild of Sky’s R&D department, which has proven it’s possible to transmit 3D pictures over existing equipment.

The experiment used the current Sky HD set-top box, receiving pictures of Ricky Hatton’s boxing match against Juan Lazcano, as well as the Champions League game between Liverpool and Marseille.

OK, so Sky’s equipment had to be hooked up to one of Hyundai’s 3D screens, but the result could point to a Sky 3D service in the future.

Sky’s Gerry O’Sullivan says that the broadcaster’s satellite dishes and receivers are now “3D ready.” Time to get saving for a 3D telly then…

A man called last Saturday and wanted me to change to Sky from a Virgin + box and mentioned the 3D Sky box. He also said something about putting a screen in front of your hd tv so that you can view 3D pictures. What was he talking about? I told him I don’t watch enough tv to bother with 3D, I expect people with children would though.

Sky will offer 3D through its current Sky+HD box so if he’s from Sky, he shouldn’t be selling you anything other than the standard machine. You’ll also need an actual 3D TV, not a layer to place over your current one.
