I might not trust MS very much as a corporation but generally the Xbox figures they put out have been pretty good usually quoting GfK ChartTrack or NPD data.
Sony on the other hand are not shy of using misleading and unsubstantiated remarks, a couple of times MS's figures have been disputed by Sony only to have MS proven to be right when the NPD data arrived.
All companies use spin to make the data they have look positive, for example if their sales are poor one month they may quote a year over year percentage of growth or pick a worse month to show that sales have increased but Sony have in the past gone a bit further and released misleading and/or unsourced data.

While America and Microsoft may not be all that popular in Europe a sweet price point sure is. I know a few unemployed parents that have purchased 360s for their kids this xmas.
low income familys are not quite as political as middle and upper income people and their main concern is streaching the money. the 360 is gonna sell a very well this xmas and enjoy strong sales in 09 due to the spin off fact.
When your friends have 360s you want one too.
