One of the nice things about social photo gallery site Flickr is the way it collects EXIF data from uploaded pictures and crunches the numbers to tell us interesting facts about the way people are using digital photography.
EXIF tags are extra bits of data that your camera tacks on to digital photos – most cameras will tag your pics with basic data like date and time stamps but you you usually get a lot of extra info too.
As well as picture sizes, GPS locations and image resolutions, Flickr also keeps track of the types of camera that people are using to take their snaps. Although Flickr users primarily prefer ‘proper’ cameras like the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi and the Nikon D80 many Flickr photos come from cameraphones and of these, one stands head and shoulders above the competition – the iPhone.
Interestingly, the iPhone is starting to encroach on the ‘real’ camera graphs too. Is this just a function of iPhone owners being more likely to use social sites like Flickr? Or is it more to do with how easy it is to upload a photo directly to the Flickr site from an iPhone with an always-on Net connection?
