Virgin’s only just launched its 50Mb fibre optic broadband service, but already there’s competition from companies still using copper lines. Be Broadband says it’ll soon be dishing up 48Mb connections.
Announcing it can “bond” two of its existing 24Mb connections together, Be reckons its service will provide super-fast speeds to those outside of Virgin’s cable network.
It’s already undertaken trials in the Paddington area of London, resulting in speeds between 30Mb and 45Mb in real-world conditions.
Explaining the offer, Felix Geyr, managing director of Be, told Macworld: “We want to push the limits of high-speed broadband. We already offer the fastest possible broadband on an ADSL line, but we want to take it a step further. If you want broadband around the 50Mb mark but don’t want to go the cable route, Be wants to offer you a real alternative”.
More trials are planned for next year, although we’re still waiting for pricing from Be for its newest, and fastest, connections. Meanwhile, Virgin’s service will be available to five million homes by the end of the month, starting at £35 per month.
