Rumours of a new Mac Mini are doing the rounds again, ahead of Macworld in January, but this time they’ve got more credibility than ever, due to a slump in Apple Mac sales, compared to PC sales during November.
According to the latest industry figures, Apple’s year on year Mac sales slipped by 1% for November, while the PC market as a whole rose by 2% in the same period. It could be seen as a sign that Apple’s premium pricing isn’t doing it any favours in the current economic climate, but it’s also being cited as evidence that Apple needs to revamp the lower end of its product line, namely the Mac Mini.
According to Wired, that’s exactly what it’ll do in January, citing a source inside the company that says a new Mac Mini will be unveiled at Macworld.
It’ll reportedly feature an all-new aluminium enclosure, built in the same style as the new MacBook and MacBook Pro. It’ll also use less polluting components and less power than any other Mac, allowing Apple to proclaim it’s the “greenest Mac ever.”
There’ll also be Apple’s new DisplayPort connector, so it’ll work with the company’s newest monitors, as well as 2GB of RAM, doubling the standard for the current Mac Mini.
In terms of speed and storage, Wired claims the new Mini will boast a 160GB hard drive and the more powerful models will come with a 2.3GHz processor, and Nvidia’s new video cards, just likt the MacBook Pro.
Will the rumours ring true? There’s less than a month until we find out for sure.
