It’s been denied more times than a Clinton scandal, but the latest rumour doing the rounds is that Microsoft won’t unveil a Zune Phone device at CES next month, but rather a whole new mobile platform, sitting on top of Windows Mobile to make multimedia much more intuitive.
These leaked shots of Windows Mobile 6.5 have already surfaced online, bearing an obvious resemblance to the Zune interface.
What’s more, blogger Paul Thurrott has been mentioning the Zune Mobile on his website. He’s a well-respected tipster, and now says “Microsoft is working on a number of things before [the next full OS update], Windows Mobile 7. These include a new version of the WM version of IE, called Internet Explorer 6, and a new Windows Mobile platform called Zune Mobile that includes Zune functionality.”
There are murmurs the new software will include a music store too, ready to download songs on the move. And if the interface is anything like the one in those leaked shots, we can’t see it soon enough.
So, can Zune Mobile, available on every Windows Mobile handset save Microsoft from the march of the iPhone? We’ll know next month.
