Estonia adopts SMS voting

Categories: Mobile Phones News   Tags: , ,

This will definitely not go wrong. The Estonian parliament has decided to allow citizens to vote using their mobile phones.

Estonia actually seem to be ahead of the curve when it comes to voting methods, having used Internet-based voting at their last Parliamentary elections. SMS voting should be online for the next Estonia General Election in 2011.

The system relies on a special chip – which presumably implements some kind of digital signature – that must be fitted to the voter’s phone. The chips are available for free from Estonia’s SK Certification Centre, which oversees the country’s ID card scheme.
