There was much rejoicing among Nokia owners when the Mozilla Foundation announced a Nokia-compatible mobile version of the Firefox web browser earlier this year. This unfortunately turned into gnashing of teeth and wailing upon the realisation that they only meant Nokia Internet Tablets, which run Maemo Linux rather than the Symbian S60 OS found in Nokia’s smartphones.
Well, you can all get out your party hats again – Mozilla developer Christian Sejersen has announced via his blog that a S60 release is back on the cards.
“In order for Mozilla to be relevant in the smartphone space we need to have a presence on the Symbian platform. We have worked with Symbian to understand and scope the size of the project and Symbian are supporting this with engineers to start working on this project so far.”
Mozilla plan to have full browsing working by the end of April, although there is no confirmed date for beta testing to begin.
