Skyfire is a new-ish (it has been around on Windows Mobile for a while) mobile browser for Symbian Series 60 phones that promises to bring ‘real’ browsing to your handset. It seems to have been in various stages of beta-readiness for ages but the developers (Skyfire Labs) have finally released it into the world.
Like Opera Mini, Skyfire isn’t actually a proper web browser at all but rather a sort of viewer client that sends your page requests to one of Skyfire Labs’ proxy servers and displays the optimised results that they process for you. This makes browsing much quicker as you only download a compressed version of each page from the Skyfire cache.
We’re yet to try the new release, but had a go of the most recent beta and were quite impressed. The app renders full web pages just as you would expect on a proper PC (you just have to Zoom in to read and click through) and it handled YouTube videos really well, even over 3G.
Skyfire is available to download in the UK, USA and Canada.
