iTunes might only be available to iPhone and iPod touch owners with Wi-Fi, but 7digital’s hard at work on its own mobile download store, ready to serve up songs to your handset, Apple-branded or not.

In an interview with Distorted Loop, 7digital’s chief executive Ben Drury let slip that the company is working on a mobile version of its online music store.

“We want to take the digital music experience beyond a retail experience and you’ll see 7digital on mobile before too long,” he explained, adding that the music store is expanding rapidly, and aims to eclipse even iTunes with “the broadest global footprint of any digital music service.”

Impressive plans, but there’s already stiff competition brewing. Not only does Apple have iTunes on the iPhone, but Amazon MP3 is available for Android phones in the US too. With last week’s launch of Amazon MP3 in the UK, it’s hard to see the app staying out of Britain for long. Better get your skates on Ben!
