Thought you could pack a lot onto Blu-Ray? You’re wrong! Pioneer’s just taken Sony’s format, and with a bit of fiddling, doubled its capacity!

Packing 1 terabyte onto the disc can’t have been easy, but according to Pioneer that’s exactly what they’ve accomplished. They’ll go on sale when demand for them makes sales worthwhile, which means we’ll see a 400GB and 500GB version first.

Pioneer’s been busilly showing off its 400GB Blu-Ray at the IT Month Fair in Taipei. It works by cramming 16 layers onto a single disc, but that’s not the best bit.

The icing on the cake is that these ultra-roomy Blu-Rays are compatible with existing players.

Read-only versions will be available between “now and 2010,” while re-writable versions will hit in 2012.

And that 1TB version? Out in 2013, apparently.
