Cough, splutter, what? 30p per day? That’s exactly what Virgin Mobile’s charging for mobile web access. It’s astonishingly cheap, and completely unlimited too…. or is it?
Well, Virgin Media says it’s unlimited, but after digging through the terms and conditions it turns out there’s a 25 megabyte per day “Fair Use Policy”. That’s pretty measly, especially if you were hoping to download music, podcasts or, heaven forbid, video.
Sure, it’s cheaper than similar offerings, like 3’s 50p Internet Daily add-on, but it’s still no good if you’re looking to download anything substantial. Even a few hefty e-mail attachments could run you into trouble.
What sort of trouble you ask? How about £2 per megabyte once you’re over the limit. Suddenly it doesn’t seem that attractive, does it?
Our advice is to look beyond the low price to begin with, and pick a data tariff with proper usage levels. Yes, you’ll have to pay a bit more up-front each month, but you’re much less likely to get a financial spanking when the bill lands 30 days later.
