Add another intriguing item to the list of features coming to Sony’s elusive PlayStation Home. Some beta users have let slip that Home developers are considering introducing virtual money into the online world. Home currency will allegedly be earned by scoring Trophies. If you’re a bit of a Trophy obsessive, you’ll be pleased to learn that you’ll get virtual cash from your existing Trophy cabinet too.
Home currency will then be used to spend on in-Home items, such as outfits for your avatar and furniture for your private Home space.
It’s all just a rumour for now, and we’re still patiently waiting for Sony to get around to opening up the virtual world for full public beta testing so we can see for ourselves. Even then, we’re still a loooong way short of having a fully working, final release.
Repeated delays haven’t done Home much good and many gamers have long since started to lose interest. Sony will have to come up some much more interesting ideas than virtual press conferences to hook players back in. Virtual currency might do it – and we’re all for it if it means you won’t have to spend real money on the decent virtual items.
We reckon it would be pretty smart if you were able to spend your virtual money on placing bets on the outcome of online matches. We’d certainly love to try the life of a high-rolling gambler in a world where renewed wealth comes after sinking a few more hours into Fallout 3.
