Bad news commuters: your peaceful journey to work may soon be spoiled by choruses of leet speak coming from Nokia handset owners. One enterprising software wizard has worked out how to get classic multiplayer shooter Quake III running on a handful of S60 handsets. You can play, host your own match and even hook up a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for proper control.

It’s kind of staggering to think that what once required a huge and expensive bit of computing equipment to run, can now operate on a mere mobile phone. The Quake III port has been tested on three S60 3rd Edition phones – the Nokia N95 8GB, N82 and E90. The original N95 won’t work as it doesn’t have enough RAM, but we can’t see any reason why an N96 wouldn’t work.

Installing the game to your handset isn’t overwhelmingly straight forward, but there’s a set of step-by-step instructions to be found here. If anyone has a spare copy of Quake III (you still need the original disc) and wants to give it a whirl, do let us know how it works out.

    No reason why an N96 can’t play it?? Oh come on it’s very simple, it doesn’t have a 3d graphics chip, and also has a very slow ARM9 200MHz range, CPU. RAM isn’t everything you know.

    The N96 will not, in fact, work. At all. Good to check the old facts first. The new Nokia phones have pissed off a lot of people by leaving out the one major selling point….a 3d graphics accelerator. Also;

    Point one, your honour, is that the processor is actually clocked slower than the N95 8Gb and E90 and N82.

    Point two, rather stupidly, the finnish idiots left OUT the TI OMAP POWER VR acceleration which makes this game possible. So the older NOKIA handsets are, in fact, much better (see http://www.glbenchmark.com/compare.jsp?benchmark=glpro&showhide=true&D1=Nokia N95 8GB&D2=Nokia N82&D3=Nokia E90&D4=Nokia N96 for actual comparisons).

    The N96 runs OpenGL ES at a staggering 152 frames (very poor), the older phones at up to 2060 frames (bloody good).

    NOKIA has really lost its way by going away from the OMAP 2420 range.

    The SAMSUNG INNOV8 can also run this game, btw, as there is a samsung version available on the website page – that phone also has a 3d accelerator chip (not quite as good as the N95 8Gb/N82 and E90, but still pretty hot. Actually, the SAMSUNG i8510 Innov8 3d chip is based on similar PowerVR architecture to the iPhone’s 3d chip)

    simple. put the 3d chip back in your phones, nokia like the brilliant N95 8Gb. Thats what put you at the top of the phones list, the fastest 3d chip enabled phone. EVER.

    Check this for proof;

    Very good point. I stand corrected.
