Sharing videos with YouTube just got a lot more snazzy. The world’s largest video sharing site just updated to allow widescreen clips, and is experimenting with HD too.
Old videos uploaded to the site appear to be being updated too, while new ones should now show up with a width of 960 pixels automatically.
YouTube says the move is to “reflect the quality of the videos you create and the screens that you use to watch them. This new, wider player is in a widescreen aspect ratio which we hope will provide you with a cleaner, more powerful viewing experience.”
It’s the second major update for YouTube this year, after allowing “high quality” clips back in March. That update took videos from 320×240 resolution to 480 x 360. The latest move doubles that.
YouTube is also known to be experimenting with 720p HD content. Click this link, and you’ll see one crafty user has it working, albeit by adding a few choice characters to the URL. You’ll also need to watch in full-screen mode to get the full effect.
