Remember the controversy surrounding gamers buying second hand Wii Speak kit? Nintendo locks each microphone to a specific console with a unique download key only allowing a single serve of the required software, making getting hold of one on the cheap a no-no. But now they’ve cleared up the confusion, explaining gamers will be able to sort it out with a quick call to customer services.

Issuing a statement today, the Wii-maker said: “Nintendo can confirm that when consumers purchase the Wii Speak accessory, they are provided with a Wii Download Ticket with a unique number. The ticket, which can be redeemed via the Wii Shop Channel, will enable the user to download the Wii Speak Channel free of charge to a single Wii console.

“Any consumer who may have misplaced their Wii Download Ticket number for the Wii Speak Channel or require a new number following a Wii exchange may contact their local Nintendo Customer Services department, where they can request a replacement Wii Download Ticket number.”

Seems a bit pointless now, doesn’t it? Why not make the Wii Speak channel free for all to download? Is Nintendo worried about gamers bringing their own mic to the party and gabbling away for free? Looks like it.

The first game to use Wii Speak is the impossibly twee Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City. It launches next Friday with the Wii Speak microphone included for a not so twee £60.
