The dinky Dell Inspiron Mini 9 just got an update on the other side of the Atlantic, with American customers given the option to fit their laptop with a 32GB solid state drive. That’s twice the standard size for just $100, or £66 more.

There’s no sign of the update on this side of the pond yet, with Dell’s website listing either an 8GB or 16GB drive as the only options for its tiniest laptop.

We’re still left wondering whether 32GB is enough, however.

Sure, it guarantees against data loss from bumps and bangs, but after allowing for Windows, a handful of apps and the odd document or two it’s barely big enough to hold more than a dozen films, a smattering of TV shows, and less than enough music to fill a 30GB iPod!

What do you think? Are solid state drives still an expensive luxury? Are you seriously worried (or accident prone) enough to splash out on solid state security? Give us a shout in the comments section below.
