Remember how we suggested that the latest PlayStation Portable version, PSP 300, might be unhackable? How wrong we were. The security’s been cracked and a UK company, Datel, is about to launch the Lite Blue Tool, a special kind of battery that puts the PSP into service mode.
Service mode is needed to downgrade and install custom firmware so that you can get at the huge wealth of homegrown PSP software and, unfortunately, the inordinate number of pirated PSP games.
The legitimacy of the tool lingers in a legal grey area, but as of writing, Sony hasn’t slipped the leash on its frothing pack of lawyers. According to earlier reports, Sony paid a lot of attention to security in its latest handheld and it’s certainly not going to be best pleased about this development.
The £20 Lite Blue Tool allows you to toggle between service and normal mode via a switch and features a built-in LED power gauge. It’s the only battery of its kind to work with the PSP 3000, but’ll work with the older Slim & Lite too. It’s landing in the UK on 1st December.
