Alienware‘s not the only company capable of turning out gaming laptops to rival beige boxes for power: Packard Bell’s doing it too, and its latest iPower GX looks likely to make a few converts when it drops in January.

The 17 inch desktop replacement packs an NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS graphics card, an Intel Core 2 Quad processor and up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM (That’s the good type). A 1900×1200 resolution means it’ll happily play back 1080p HD, although there’s no Blu-ray for equivalent movies – but when Fallout 3 looks as lifelike as one, who needs films?

Oh, and to make clear it’s all cool and stuff, Packard Bell’s plastered graffiti all over it, because that’s what kids like.

Out January | From £999 | Packard Bell

Having spent 4 years of my youth working in Currys selling Packard Bell products (and fixing them when they broke) I can officially reveal that this is likely to be very very badly made, full of bloatware and liable to break one day after the warranty runs out. Please don’t buy this.

PB certainly does have a reputation, but maybe it’s trying to shake off the shackles of the past? Gaming laptops always seemed like a bit of an oxymoron to me…
