Apple’s just released an update for its set-top Apple TV, letting it play nicely with any existing remotes in the house, and streaming music to other Apple kit around the house.
The software, which takes the box to version 2.4, adds a feature allowing Apple TV to ‘learn’ commands from existing remotes. That means you can use a single remote to control your TV and streamer, by teaching the Apple box how to recognise the TV’s existing remote.
There are also new streaming functions, letting Apple’s set-top companion stream its contents to other Apple TVs in the house, or direct to Airport Express Wi-Fi adapters with speakers plugged in.
It puts Apple’s system on a par with proper multi-room systems like Sonos, albeit without the added luxury of Last.FM and Napster capabilities, and with the added expense of an iPhone or iPod touch as a remote to get the most out of it.
