The JCB Toughphone has achieved a Guinness World Record for being the World’s Toughest Mobile Phone.

To fulfill the strict requirements, the record attempt had to be witnessed by independent judges who would act as testers once the phone had been dropped from a number of increasing heights.

First was a walk-in-the-park drop of 1.6 metres – not a scratch, then 3.25 metres – bit of a bounce, but no damage, then the same height again onto concrete. No problem whatsoever.

Now, this may not sound like much, but when you think about those stories you’ve heard about iPhones being dropped down toilets, and finding cracks in the casing before you’ve even had a chance to get your paws on it, then the usefulness of such a hardcore handset becomes clear.

And according to JCB, the Toughphone has been thrown off buildings, dragged behind boats and quad bikes, driven over by cars and still lived to tell the tale. It also comes fully certified against dust, dirt and shock and as well as being fully water-resistant.

It features Bluetooth, tri-band connectivity and built-in speakers. On the down side, the screen is only 128 x 160 pixels in resolution, and it lacks a camera and multimedia features. But what you do get is an extremely rugged and downright durable handset, backed by a no-nonsense three year guarantee.
