The megapixel pissing contest with camera phones is starting to get serious. Samsung has already produced a 10-megapixel mobile, but Sony’s gone one (well, two) better: its Exmor IMX060PQ sensor boasts 12.25 megapixels!
The firm also announced new 5.15 and 8.11-megapixel sensors, but inevitably the 12.25er is attracting the headlines – and we could be seeing it used in mobile phones as soon as March 2009.
But before we get too carried away, it’s worth remembering that megapixel count is only one aspect of digital photography – there’s little point in being able to shoot massive 12-megapixel photos if they’re full of noise, and the quality of the lens and the low-light abilities of the camera (aperture size and flash abilities) are just as important.
