Virgin Mobile’s Liberty Sim has given Richard Branson’s company a chance to become a credible contract player with 78,300 new contract customers in the last four months.

The amount of prepay customers fell to 3.7 million customers from 4.1 million this time last year, hence the change in tactics.

Virgin Mobile has been heavily promoting its Sim-only deals, and group CEO Neil Berkett said that a big contributor for the sales was pushing the deal on Virgin’s existing home broadband customers.

The operator has already added 2,000 mobile broadband customers since the deal’s launch last month in Carphone Warehouse stores across the country.

The Liberty Sim deal itself means you can keep your existing phone and number, there’s no long-term contract and it apparently offers more minutes for £10 than any other network in the UK.
