Modems. Boring, right? Not when they’re this slick, sexy and speedy. Virgin’s new box drags 50Mbps of internet direct to your computer in style.

The 50Mbps service has been promised for a while, but only in select areas. Now Virgin’s poised to flick the switch and light up the nation with 50Mbps through its fibre optic network.

The new modem required to access those grin-inducing speeds is just as impressive as the bitrate it delivers. Clad in a glossy piano black finish, there’s no denying it’s gorgeous. Discreet lights up-front let you know what it’s up to at a glance too.

Around the back there’s a single Ethernet port, which will connect to a wireless router, or direct to a PC.

It might sound silly, but we’re genuinely excited about this router. 50Mbps is enough to download around 6 megabytes every second. That means a 5GB HD movie will download in less than 15 minutes. In reality, that’s quick enough to begin watching it immediately, while the rest downloads in the background.

Now all we need is a price for Virgin’s tantalising service!

So they have brought out a modem for the service they “claim” has 50mb speeds. I have the Virgin 20mb XL package at the moment and most of the time my speed is only around 6-8mb!!
Maybe if i upgrade to the 50mb service once it comes out i’ll actually get the 20mb speeds i wanted in the first place!!
