We’ve known about Toshiba’s plan to use the Cell processor from the PS3 inside its next-gen tellies for a while, but now the ultra-smart screens have a price and a release date. Get set for the best TV you’ve ever clapped eyes on.

Dubbed the ZV Series, the new Toshiba TVs actively upscale anything that’s fed into them. That could be a standard definition DVD, a Freeview signal or the output from a games console.

A Cell processor inside then works its magic, using technology Toshiba’s calling Resolution+ to beef up the picture quality.

The result is the same as you’d get from a DVD upscaler, but on everything that’s shown on the screen. It means consoles like the Wii look better than ever, while Freeview’s sometimes smudgy pictures finally become acceptable to the eye.

The screens are full HD too, with Toshiba’s latest Active Vision image processing and support for 24p playback from Blu-Ray.

Around the back there are three HDMI sockets, as well as Component Video, SCART, a PC Input and S-Video.

Available in 42 and 46-inch versions, they’ll be available from December for £900 and £1,200 respectively.

Out December | From £900 | Toshiba
