Take this one with a pinch of salt, but it seems that social networking giant MySpace may be planning its very own branded portable music player to compete with the iPod.

So say the musical mavens over at Distorted Loop. They report that MySpace CEO Chris DeWolf told San Francisco’s Web 2.0 Summit that his firm could supplement its new US only music store by releasing hardware to play all those downloaded tunes on.

But DeWolf’s rather vague assertions that “it’s possible” make it sound like this device won’t be coming any time soon. And in any case, MySpace would have to develop a truly amazing music player to tempt buyers away from the ever popular iPod. Our advice? Don’t hold your breath on this one.
