If you didn’t believe that Nintendo’s latest update to its DS consoles would result in a sales frenzy, think again. Japanese mag publisher Enterbrain has compiled a list of retail sales which already accounted for 170,000 out of the first batch of 200,000 units by Sunday, two days after the handheld launched. It’s probably fair to assume that it’s completely sold out by now.
Nintendo expects to have another 100,000 units out to retailers by the end of the week, although it’s anyone’s guess as to how long that shipment will last.
If earlier research was to be believed, a large proportion of potential DSi buyers were happy to wait a while before getting their incremental hardware update. So that presumably means there’s a hell of a lot more units still to be sold.
With an estimated 24 million DS consoles already sold in Japan, we’re wondering whether if there is any player there not sporting at least a couple of DS consoles by now.
If Ninty manages to fend of the crazed mob of DS gamers for long enough, it expects to start shipping the DSi to the UK sometime in the Spring. It’s fair to say its home country is vouching for it.
