After the unofficial release of the GameBoy emulator on iPhone, which was only available to iPhone owners with hacked handsets, it was only natural that someone should develop the equivalent for Android.
The iPhone GameBoy emulator was restricted to certain circles due to its dubious legality and the non-sanctioned SDK tools used to develop it. But it’s already proved a big success and has spawned an Android-flavoured counterpart.
AndroidBoy hasn’t been hindered by any legal obstacles yet, and it’s now available through Google’s official Android Market. This open availability is testament to Google’s more relaxed approach to app development. Put bluntly, developers can create whatever they like for Android phones. There’s also no way to block them from distributing apps, since unlike the iPhone, they can be loaded onto phones outside the official store.
AndroidBoy supports original GameBoy games together with more recent gaming titles, using touchscreen controls to instantly transform the T-Mobile G1 into a veritable Super GameBoy. As if you needed another reason to splash the cash.
