Last week we heard Opera had created a version of its lightning-fast web browser for the iPhone, only to have Apple reject it, since it would compete with its own Safari browser. Now we hear that might not be the case at all.

Citing un-named sources, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber says: “My understanding, based on information from informed sources who do not wish to be identified because they were not authorized by their employers is that Opera has developed an iPhone version of Opera Mini, they haven’t even submitted it to Apple, let alone had it be rejected.”

It’s entirely possible that Apple is working with Opera behind the scenes, outside the normal submission channels, just as they appear to be with Adobe over Flash on the iPhone. But for the moment there’s still stony silence from all sides through official channels.

What do you think? Should Apple be forced to open the iPhone? Give us a shout in the comments section below.

Gruber is an Apple-apologist Mactard so I’d take this with a big grain of salt.

Opera mini isn’t a normal browser; it’s partly implemented on the server side by special Opera proxy servers. This makes it fast (high powered rendering assist plus bandwidth reduction), but not entirely comparable with a conventional browser like mobile Safari.

Obviously Apple is keen to define the iPhone platform clearly, which does mean holding back alternative implementations of core features (email, browsing, video, animation). Apple is also keen to ensure that the mobile data service provision meets the needs of a proper browser, rather than letting any carrier push their users across to a special low bandwidth browser like Opera mini.

A quote from, of all places, PC World:

All may not be as it appears. I caught up with Tor Odland, Director of Corporate Communications at Opera, who says earlier reports overstate the situation. In fact Odland says, “Opera has not yet submitted a version of Opera Mini to Apple’s App Store, but may do so in the future.”
