UPDATE: Looks like Apple’s not keen on crashing the Big M’s party after all. In an rare move to stop the speculation it’s just confirmed there’ll be no new Macs before Christmas.

Rumours of a new Mac Mini and iMac being announced on Monday have been laughed at by some, claiming “Apple usually releases new products on a Tuesday.” That’s true, except this Monday is special. It’s Windows 25th birthday. Is Apple planning on being a party pooper?

If the rumours are true, Monday could see Apple’s attempt to kick Microsoft out of the limelight as it celebrates a quarter century on desktop PCs.

Introduced by Bill Gates on November 10 1983, Windows was originally sold for $100. On Monday, the operating system will be 25 years old.

Coincidentally, Apple also announced the Power Macintosh G3 on November 10th 1997, so there’s a chance it could claim significance of its own by updating the Mac Pro.

    I’d LOVE to see Apple rain on Microsoft’s parade – it needs to be something really, really special though. Mac tablet maybe, or iPhone 4G ;0D

    how fucking childish. As if a tiny update to a really old design can out-do 25 years of Windows? Mac fanboys would never stop crying if MS did that to their precious Apple.

    I should think it will be another 6 months at least before another version of the iPhone. The only reason that there was a 2nd version so close to the launch of the first was because they wanted to add the 3G functionality from the word go but weren’t able to because of the battery.

    I would think the most likely event would be refreshes to the processors in the iMac and Mac Pro lines. The new Intel core i7 chips seem to be limping out of the factories at the moment and as Apple and Intel are now best buddies it isnt such a great leap of faith to assume that Apple will get their hands on them early on in their lifetime.

    The mac tablet isn’t going to happen for a while yet so I wouldn’t hold your breath.

    Apple doesn’t need to crash Microsoft party if it’s going to stay cool. Apple just needs to keep making great products and Listening to customers of course.
