Samsung is the latest firm to show off a next-gen OLED television – and this isn’t a dinky standard def model like Sony’s 11-inch XEL-1. Samsung’s prototype is a 40-inch display with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080.
As is the norm with OLED screens, the as-yet-unnamed display boasts a massive claimed contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, which suggests it can deliver both deep, detail-rich blacks and eyeball-scorchingly bright whites. And everything in between.
But we’ll have to wait a while to see what it can do with EastEnders, unfortunately. In it’s current state it’s just a prototype – albeit the largest OLED screen Samsung can make – and mass production is apparently a long way off. The Sony XEL-1, meanwhile, should be on sale by the end of the year.
