In a not-very-surprising piece of news, Apple has decided not to allow an iPhone-friendly version of the Opera Mini web browser to be made available on the iTunes App Store.

Opera had developed a version of its Mini browser especially for the iPhone and iPod touch operating systems (the app is already available for Windows Mobile, S60, Palm and BlackBerry mobile phones), but it seems that Apple wants to make sure its own Safari app remains the web browser of choice for these gadgets. That’s what Opera’s Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner told The New York Times, anyway.

Of course, there could be another explanation for the rejection, but competition seems to be the logical reason. We’ll bring you more on the story when we get it.

its kinda unfair how microsoft is being suedand complained to for making internet users choose internet explorer over firefox and opera and yet aple easily gets away with forcing ipod touch users ect to use safari

I agree entirely. Unfortunately, people won’t grumble too much until Safari on the iPhone isn’t the best mobile browser available. As it stands, that may be some way off.
