Apple Corps and MTV/Harmonix are set to collaborate on a videogame based on The Beatles. And from what various online reports of a teleconference are suggesting, the game is not set to simply be either a download pack or expansion for the Rock Band series, but an “experiential progression through and celebration of the music and artistry of The Beatles” – in other words, an all new game.
That said, on the partnership Ringo Starr said: “It gives me great pleasure to be part of The Beatles / Apple and Harmonix / Rock Band partnership” and Olivia Harrison said: “People are having so much fun playing Rock Band. Combined with The Beatles tracks, it is a great way to either listen or participate.” So the implication is fairly strongly that the game will be at least strongly based on the Rock Band series. Sad news for those hoping for some kind of Yellow Submarine mind-expanding audio-visual interactive trip.
The deal could also pave the way for The Beatles tracks to appear in Rock Band also. And, needless to say, the deal is an exclusive – so don’t expect to see Sgt. Pepper popping up in Guitar Hero anytime soon.
