Train operator C2C have given up asking people to actually stop using their phones in the ‘Quiet Zone’ on their trains and instead plan to cover the carriage windows in a film that simply blocks all mobile signals.

While enforcing the issue will be a pain to us quiet mobile web surfers who’ll no longer be able to download on the go, it’ll be a blessed relief to never hear the inane drivel spouting from the mouth of Trish in HR:

‘No, staying in, X-Factor’s on, what about you?’
‘Oh, yeah, maybe one glass.’
‘So how is the psoriasis?’

The peace will be deafening!

The technology being used is being borrowed from the U.S. defence industry where a transparent conductive film, dubbed the TEMPEST is placed across the glass blocking all wi-fi, radio and phone signals.

Question is, who’s going to be first on board with a satellite phone?

And before you reach for the soapbox citing jamming privacy laws, C2C can get round any dodgy legal issues because passengers have to agree to the terms and conditions of quiet carriages in order to sit in them.

Barking idea or brilliant commuter pacifier? Let us know in the comments box below.

Most satellite phones operate in the L-Band (around 1600 mhz) so if the film blocks mobile phones then satphones won’t work either. i think this is a great idea i often wanted to carry around a GSM jammer so i can cut off that muppet shouting into his phone
