All the music you can download, completely DRM-free and yours to keep forever. No, we haven’t lost our minds, that really is the offering from new download service Datz.

It’s similar to Nokia’s Comes With Music service, but while the Finnish phone firm will lock songs to one mobile and a single PC, tracks from Datz are DRM-free, so they can be used on any device.

£100 gets you a gift box with the software needed to access the service, as well as a year’s access, letting yuo download as much as you like.

The only snag is that it’s a Windows-only affair at the moment. There’ll be a Mac version available in December.

So far, a bunch of independent record labels have signed up to provide music, alongside EMI and Warner. More are due to sign up next year, increasing the choice of music on offer. We’ll have a hands-on with Datz in the next couple of days, and will report back on the quality, choice and ease of use.

It is always good to see another model emerging, but to pay £100 for a pretty limited catalogue of music is asking consumers too much. Why would they pay £100 in case Datz could provide some of the music they want, when they can download the tracks they actually want for free. The only answer piracy, is to offer consumers a realistic alternative. Also, if people did really download “all they can eat”, Datz would be faced with an unsustainable bill to artists and rights holders making their service no longer profitable.
