The T-Mobile G1 launches tomorrow, but already the ranks of rival Android phones are swelling. Now we hear Asus is preparing its own phones running the OS. Will it be dubbed the EeePhone?
There’s a chance, according to DigiTimes, which reckons there’ll be an Asus-branded Android phone on shelves within the first six months of 2009.
Citing unnamed sources, the report claims the new phone will show up in Taiwan first, before heading overseas.
Of course, it’s not a big stretch to see Asus making an Android phone. The company already cranks out Windows Mobile-powered handsets, and Google’s OS is specifically designed to run on a range of hardware platforms.
However, with lower licensing fees, could Android be the route to Asus creating a cut-price EeePhone to go with the Eee PC, Eee Box and Eee Top?
