Apple’s seeded a new version of the iPhone’s software to developers, revealing new route-finding functions to help anyone using public transport, or the power of their own legs, to get around.

The iPhone Software 2.2 beta 2 was released on Friday, and features a much-improved version of Google Maps.

The new software allows directions to be plotted for those in a car, using public transport, or on foot. Estimated commute times are included with directions for public transport, while walking directions automatically steer clear of busy streets.

What’s more, the new software includes Google Street View, allowing pictures of destinations at street level to be viewed on the phone.

The move will bring the iPhone into line with Google’s Android-powered phones, which already allow Street View access out and about. The first Android-powered phone, the T-Mobile G1, hits the UK on Thursday. A release date for Apple’s new iPhone software is still unknown.
