Not content with offering new Google Maps features in the forthcoming iPhone software update, Google’s released a version of Google Earth for Apple’s handset.

The software works just like the desktop version, with Google promising it’ll let users “hold the world in the palm of your hand.”

Using it is a cinch, with simple finger swipes, pinches and rotation to move the globe and zoom in. Users can even tilt their phones to change the angle of the images on screen.

As you’d expect from a Google product, there’s a powerful search tool built in, and locations on screen can be prodded to call up location-tagged photos and Wikipedia entries for specific places.

Google Earth will even use the iPhone’s GPS to pin down your location on the globe, and yes, it’s all free. Check out the video below to see it in action.
