Straddling a motorbike just got a lot less dangerous, with Honda unveiling a new GPS system to warn of cars on a collision course with your ‘cycle.
Shown off at the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium event in Germany, it’s a neat system that gives bikers advance warning of other vehicles up ahead. Honda says it’s particularly helpful at intersections, as it can predict which cars are on a “collision course”.
And it’s not just Honda’s vehicles that’ll get the benefit. Eight other motor manufacturers have signed up to help build the system, allowing cars and bikes to share their location with each other, so they can shout up if careless drivers are up ahead.
“European research shows the majority of accidents involving a motorcycle are caused by perception failures,” Honda explains. “This system will reduce these failures.”
Honda’s system spies potential hazards ahead, and then warns riders using spoken instructions through a Bluetooth headset or helmet.
