Sony has news that will be music to the ears of the PS3 faithful. Resistance 2 has reach gold status, so it’s ready to be printed to Blu-ray disc and shipped to retailers. On top of that, if you really can’t wait until the end of next month to get playing, there’s an open beta kicking off today.

Now that Sony has made it clear it won’t be pandering to pesky economic turbulence and dropping the price of its console ahead of Xmas, it hopes are pinned on its major exclusives to see it through the festive season. Resistance 2 is one of those titles and Sony’s best answer to Xbox 360’s massive Gears of War 2.

The open beta is designed to stress test the game’s online servers to ensure they can cope with the weight of players who’ll be logging in come the 28th November. This is more important than ever for Resistance 2 and its ambitious 60-player online matches.

If it works, it promises multiplayer carnage on a scale never seen on a console shooter before. But we wouldn’t be surprised if the first few days of the beta were a chugging mess of dropped connections and laggy, unplayable games. These are the problems betas are designed to iron out, after all.

However, if you want to spend the first couple of days of the full retail launch running rings around hapless new players because you know where to find all the best weapons and hiding places, this is your best chance of finding out. The US beta starts today, and places have been available through numerous sources including Sony’s online magazine, Qore, and pre-ordering the game at GameStop.

Here in the UK, we haven’t had as many opportunities to enter, apart from registering early on the R2 beta page. However, the UK’s beta only kicks off on Monday and CVG has revealed that more beta keys may be given out later on. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for you.
