A year (and a day) ago the laptop market looked decidedly different. You could get small laptops, and you could get cheap laptops – but the two were pretty much mutually exclusive. Asus changed all that with the Eee PC – a concept so strong, that there are now tens, if not hundreds of competitors trying to emulate its success.
The first Eee PC 701 went on sale in Taiwan on 16 October 2007. Since then we’ve not only seen what seems like seven thousand Eee variants, but everyone from Acer to Zoostorm scrabbling for a piece of the action – with even big names like Dell and HP dropping in along the way.
But it all started with an excess of vowels over in Asus’ R&D labs. We’ll be raising a glass to the little fella later on once the day’s words are out of the way, but if you feel like celebrating proper, Laptop Mag yesterday threw a party for the humble Eee PC – complete with cake and hats! And videoed it too – we’re not even kidding. Check it out: Happy Birthday Eee PC!
